OUR GENERAL AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Rescue and Rehabilitation

Provide shelter for wild animals rescued from captive or unhealthy situations in Ecuador, victims of animal trafficking, mistreatment or loss of habitat, with the appropriate conditions to enable their survival and rehabilitation. We plan to develop areas for the preservation and regeneration of identified endangered plant species.

Research and Release

Work towards the development of release programmes for these rescued animals, following national and international reintroduction guidelines, which includes forming technical teams of experienced individuals to carry out the studies which are necessary prior to the release of any animal or group of animals back into the wild. We also plan to develop similar programmes for endangered plants.

Conservation and Community

Develop conservation projects, in cooperation with the local communities, with strategies and initiatives orientated to reduce the destruction of the natural environment of Ecuador, which gives life to a huge diversity of animal and plant species.

Education and Awareness

Focus on educational and awareness programmes and campaigns for the local community in order to increase environmental awareness regarding the importance of preserving their natural resources.

Collaboration and Cooperation

Promote collaboration and cooperation between local organisations and institutions with the same aims and objectives, in order to develop more efficient conservation projects in the future, favouring the biodiversity of Ecuador.

OUR WORK IN THE PAST

The Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Centre

For the past three years we were based at the Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Centre, locally registered with the name "Wayra Urku", in the Pastaza region of Ecuador. Developments with the animals at the centre went extremely well. The Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Group's dedication and management enabled the improvement of the animals' living environments, their foodstuffs, their rehabilitation process, and the prospects for release programmes in the future have increased. In addition we improved our relationship with the local Environmental Police and Ministry of Environment immensely over this period –resulting in a number of successful rescue operations of captive animals. We also had our first residential Veterinarian on board, who contributed greatly to the animals' health and general well-being.

None of the above could have taken place without the invaluable assistance of all of the dedicated volunteers and members of the local community who gave of their time, commitment and assistance to the project.

Staying at the project, volunteers were able to utilise current skills, gain new skills, gain experience of working with endangered animals and make friends with people from around the world and amongst the local community. Volunteers indicated that they greatly enjoyed their experience working with the Centre alongside the members of the Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Group, and assisting with all the tasks associated with the rehabilitation of the animals located with the project.

Sadly, at the beginning of this year, 2009, after having worked at this location for three years, we became aware of limitations imposed physically, economically and socially. Consequently had to make the very difficult decision to make changes affecting the operation of the Flor de la Amazonia Animal Rescue Centre. Regrettably, the family on whose land the Centre was located, did not agree with the proposed changes, which caused the evacuation of all of the members and volunteers of the Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Group.

CURRENT SITUATION

-information updated October 2009-

Since January 2009, the team members of the Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Group have been based in Puyo in order to work towards the development of a potential new Rehabilitation Centre in the Pastaza region.

Current activities include:

- Identifying a suitable location to develop a new centre for the Flor de la Amazonía Animal Rescue Group,

- Finalising the registration of Fundación Fauna de la Amazonía, our non-profit organization in Ecuador,

- Assisting with the work at other promising local rescue centres in the area which have the same aims and objectives as ourselves.

- Continuing to report cases of animal mistreatment and trafficking to the Environmental Police and the Environmental Ministry, that we continue to hear of, and see.

- Organising awareness campaigns (designing and distributing pamphlets, posters, etc) to inform the public about environmental damage caused by animal trafficking, the laws protecting Ecuadorian wildlife and how the local community can contribute towards groups and institutions working in favour of the environment.
